Disclaimer: I must begin though by informing you that I've owned a business named National Bird Designs which I founded in 1976 and incorporated in 2003. It was about that same time in 2003 that I decided to market and promote a probiotic that was both live (viable) and avian-specific. The first of its kind ever to be made available for our avian friends.

Now, having stated this here on Bird Medications Blog, I will mention that not all probiotics are made the same and some do contain additives, natural and synthetic vitamins & minerals as well as various fillers that can and may cause harm if dosages are not followed to the letter.

One does not want to overdose their birds with synthetic vitamins & minerals. Now that some companies are including probiotics of one kind or another that may or may not contain pathogens, especially if not packaged properly, the consumer should keep a close watch on their birds, should any disorder suddenly appear.
One may also realize problems in their birds if fed a probiotic containing dead bacteria. Dead bacteria will decay very rapidly in water which will in the end cause more harm than good. It is best to practice extreme cleanliness with feeding and drinking utensils when administering any and all probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, avian specific bird medications or any other supplements added to the water.
Outward symptoms would be general puffiness, sleepiness during the day and general listlessness typical of any internal illness. Know also that during this state, the bird is more receptive to infections of respiratory and digestive diseases and viruses, as its' immune system has been negatively compromised. A qualified vet would be required to culture the fecal matter and examine the bird in order to prescribe the right treatment and medications to get the bird back to good health.
Overall, if using a probiotic that is live (viable) and avian-specific like Avi-Culture, that is packaged carefully and is actually capable of culturing when tested and contains no fillers or other items or pathogens, one CANNOT overdose their birds (any and all birds) regardless of how much Avi-Culture is fed to them, provided feeding and drinking utensils which are used to administer are replaced daily.
Sooner or later, zoo curators, bird pet owners and bird breeders have to take their birds to a veterinarian or a veterinarian has to visit them. The stress of taking birds to a veterinarian causes stress in a bird as does. Drastic changes in or improper environment, diet or stock or pet management can also stress a bird causing it to have a compromised immune system. When the immune system is weak, birds like all living creatures become targets for infections. When this occurs most veterinarians, zoo curators, bird pet owners and bird breeders will make the decision to place the bird on some type of bird medication or antibiotic, it is always recommended that a high-quality, viable (live), avian-specific probiotic be administered in conjuction or immediately after the drug regimen. This will insure that a healthy flora of beneficial bacteria is reestablished in the digestive system.
